Restrict access before you let someone go.
Before my first day on the job, the company had decided to let go one of their executive secretaries.
After I began working there, this executive came to me stating many of his customer contracts and files were missing form the server.
While we will never know for sure what happened, because of restrictions only a few individuals had access to this folder on the server. We speculated that before leaving the company the executive secretary had deleted these files. Nobody had thought of notifying the IT department of this dismissal so we could lock her out of "delete" access to these important files. You guessed it, no backups.
And so is lost - all of the customer contracts and documentation.
